The Maple Leaf Coin Ranks Number One For Purity And Quality

Most countries have an official silver and gold bullion coin.  None is as impressive as the Canadian Maple Leaf Coin.  This coin is produced by the Royal Canadian Mint and has one of the purest contents of gold of all the world coins.  It is 24 carats and listed as .9999 fine, with no base metals added.  This is a slight contrast to the U.S. silver and gold bullion that is certified at 99.9% with .1% copper.  It can be purchased in 1 ounce and down in denominations of 1/2, 1/4, 1/10 and 1/20 ounces.  The 1/15 ounce was created in 1994, but it was not popular enough to be produced again.  The coins are identical except for the markings that indicate their specific weight and face value.

The Maple Leaf Coin was introduced in 1979 as an additional bullion coin to the Krugerrand coin which was rather difficult to obtain due to the economic boycott of South Africa.  The maple leaf is a trade mark symbol recognized around the world to represent Canada.  They were introduced in the coin form to make them more manageable for investment purposes.  Other Canadian gold coins in the shape of the maple leaf are minted in Canada as well; the differences are in their gold content.

Queen Elizabeth II is imprinted on one side of the Maple Leaf Coin and the opposite side is the maple leaf symbol itself.  The maple leaf symbolizes Canada just as the American eagle symbolizes the United States.  The original coins showed the Queen as a young woman but it was changed in 1990 to reflect her as a bit more mature.  Their impeccable quality is what makes them such a sought after investment for investors as well as collectors all over the world.

One of the most exciting releases of a Maple Leaf Coin was on May 3, 2007.  The Royal Canadian Mint presented a coin with the face value of One Million Dollars!  The gold content itself was valued at more than two million dollars.  The coin was very impressive measuring 50 centimeters in diameter and 3 centimeters in thickness.  The weight was 100 kilograms and as with the other maple leaf coins, the purity was 99.999%.  The purpose of this particular coin was to create a showpiece to promote the maple leaf coin and gain a higher International profile. The success was more than expected and they continued to be minted on a "as ordered" basis valued between 2.5 and 3 million dollars.
